About Slavonski Brod in a few words
Geography
Brod-Posavina county - Brodsko-Posavska County is the southern
Slavonian county in Croatia. Administrative
center of the County is the city of Slavonski
Brod located along the left bank of the Sava River.
Surounding area is named Posavina. Other notable towns and places near by are
Nova Gradiška, Pozega, Djakovo, Slavonski Šamac.
The city developed at the strategically important crossing over the Sava
river towards Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is an important
traffic roadcrossings, highway (E70, A3) Zagreb–Lipovac–Belgrade
and a railway junction Zagreb-Belgrade, port "Brod" on the Sava River
and oil and gas pipelines. Railroad and highway that passes throughout
northern part of the town, connects western Europe with the Middle East.
On the Sava River, there is an road bridge which connects
Croatia with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Economy
The economy is based on farming, fruit growing, viticulture, metal-processing,
timber, textile, leather, foodstuffs, building material and others.
Largest and the most capable metal industries in the whole south-east
Europe region, Duro Dakovic consortium, consisting of number of
factories producing very diverse products, mainly for export.
Potentials of this consortium include production of: locomotives,
trams, wagons, bridges, industrial plants, nuclear and process
reactors, car industry parts, heavy armed vehicles, agricultural
machinery etc.
The surroundings area of the Slavonski Brod is a good given, area
of the splendid vineyards, with production of exceptional vines,
which are among the best in all Croatia.
Service industry is becoming rapidly important, especially tourism.
Cultural heritage
Old fortress from the baroc period, built by Austrian
empire as a stronghold against the Otoman empire, situated
in the centre of the town is a first category monument.
Fort is made in 'Vauban' style, named after one of the
best European experts for building of fortifications in
17th and 18th century. by it's monumentality it is the continental
obverse of the "Diocletian palace" in Split.
Old Franciscan monastery from the 18th century, also builted
in a baroc style, with exceptional architecture, especially
of the church yard, and monastery church interier, with beautiful
altar and paintings. This is also cultural monument of the first category.
One of the attractions of Slavonski Brod is a beautiful central
town square, Ivana Brlic-Mazuranic square, named after one of
the world most popular writers for children, which house is
on the square.
