The bridge across the river Sava

Boats, ferry-boats and pontoon bridges performed the communications between two Brod across the Sava River till 1879. By the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878. Austria has shown the interest for the building of a massive bridge over which the railway would connect parts of Monarchy with Bosnia, important of minerals, coal and wood. Engineer Wilhelm Presel made the project for a massive stone bridge with the iron construction in 1878. The building of the bridge made by companies from Vienna and Graze started in the October of the same year. A new construction manager Oto Beck von Nordenau was appointed in December of 1878. and the first train from Slavonski to Bosanski Brod passed on 1st September 1879.

The bridge that cost 4 million krunas was till 1941. one of the biggest and the most beautiful bridges in the country and the only one across the river Sava from Jasenovac to Beograd.

Int the WW II commander of Brod garrison ordered the mining of the bridge to make possible the entrance of Germans in Bosnia in April of 1941. The temporary bridge raised in October of 1945. was in use till the end of 1961. when today's bridge, which has been built since 1957, was put in traffic.

The formal openings of road and railroad bridge long 552m was on 29th December 1961. (Tr. note: That bridge was mined in the Homeland War in October of 1992 but repaired and released in use in 2000.)
